My 2005 Merc 5HP motor has repeated carb problems each time it is unused for 2-3 weeks. Now it idles without a problem but running in gear the engine keeps dying suddenly after a few secs. It re-starts first pull but dies in gear soon after. I think the needle jet needs cleaning. Are instructions and a diagram anywhere that show how to do simple carb cleaning? Every time this has happened before (x3) the local shop says it is not covered by warranty and it costs $$$$. I always drain the carb before leaving it for a couple of weeks to prevent resin build-up.
Thanks for your help.

If it's only going to be a couple of weeks of non-use,try not running it out of gas.I think your 4 stroke has the carb with the fuel passage in the corner of the float bowl. This tends to clog pretty easy, and being 'dry' could be the problem.

DHP

Thanks for the prompt reply. I will try this next time. In the meanwhile, any advice/diagram on how to remove needle jet to clean it? Thanks.

Take off the carb bowl. Turn the carb upside down. Push out the pin that holds the float. Take off the float. Turn the carb right side up. Out falls the needle.

Then look at all the passages, clean them with carb cleaner, and pass a small gauge thru the passages to be sure they are clean.A manual is helpful here.I think there is one jet I can get the cleaner and air thru, but I haven't found a small enough wire.

DHP
