Mercury 7.5hp question

A buddy of mine has a 87 mercury 7.5hp. He wants some help changing the impellar. I have aways done my own, but not on 7.5 horse. My question is before I drop the lower unit does the motor have to be in gear?

Put it in rev. before dropping it thats easier than fighting it later
