The motor runs great out of the water. When I get my boat in the water it only wants to go 5-10 MPH. I replaced a spun out prop but it is still doing this. Trim all the way up and down still no effect. The motor will kind of wind up and then bog down a bit, alsmost a sputter.

Is the Lower Unit on this bad?

How would I know if it is the lower unit?

I have the same problem. I was told that I need to change the switch box, trigger plate and stator.
I did not do anything as yet. I am trying to confirm if these parts are really bad and needs changing.

Well you will never guess what the problem was. This motor did not have an automatic choke and it had to be manually adjusted. The only way to do it is running in the water. Some mornings may be cold or some may be warm. So conditions vary.

I would love to get my hands on an automatic choke kit for this 1970 65 Merc. Life would be much easier.

Hi Blake,
Do I under stand that you have no choke solanoid or choke plunger that pulls the choke shutters close on the carb when you
push and hold down the black rubber button on
top of the control box. You should hear an audible click when you push the button down.
Also when enguaged the shutters should be closed sealing the inside of the carb throat.

...have fun...corm

Blake -- as corm says check to make sure the choke works. On some controls you have to push the key in to close the choke. Once it's started and running smooth, let it idle while you put away your boat stuff and get ready to go. It should have warmed up enough by then. Mike
