Does anyone know of a stainless driveshaft that will replace the original carbon steel driveshaft in my 1972 800 part #45-59116A1? I pulled the LU to install an upper housing kit and discovered water in the gearcase and a badly pitted driveshaft.

Have read some people brazing or silver soldering shaft then have it turned down on lathe?

The later gearcases (mid-late seventies) have the stainless steel driveshaft. They will fit your motor, althought the gear ratios could be different.

Use some emery paper to clean up your driveshaft and grease it well, before reassembly.

Thanks for the replies! I don't think I'll be able to save this shaft there's quite a bit of material missing so I don't think it'll seal properly. I have access to a large salvage yard that should have hundreds of lower units with a stainless shaft but I don't know where to begin looking.

Some folks use redi-sleeves (not sure if that is right name) to repair the sealing surface. Try the search function on this forum and you should find the model of sleeve to use. It will save you ~$480 if you use the sleeve.
