Im going through an 81' 80hp merc 4-cyl I recently purchased. carbs, fuel pump, water pump, etc...
I noticed the two yellow wires coming from the stator had a few cracks in them, and upon further checking, they were split bad and corroded. One of them actually came apart while I was moving it around checking it. The other 4 wires coming from the stator are in perfect shape, but after removing the stator, I found that the yellow wires are bad all the way up to where they enter the molded area of the stator.
Im debating on trying to locate a good used stator, or going with a new one. I found one on here for $160.00 new, but thats not exactly in my budget right now.
Are the stators pretty touchy in regards to crossing over to other motors.
My stator has #398-5454A22, and the new part number is #18-5870.
Also, what would cause the wiring to get hot? the stator itself going bad, or something else in the ignition system. I ordered a manual but havent recieved it yet, so Im limited on info right now. Thanks for any info, Mike

Re: mercury 80hp stator question

recoating the wires is out of the question, they are very badly corroded, and are coming apart.
Ive been doing some more searching, and the replacement stators are saying that they cover a wide range of factory part numbers.
One example, my number is 398-5454 A22. And the replacement stator says it will replace 398-5454 A21,A22,A24,A25,A26,A42,A56,A62,A63.
Im wondering if I can get my hands on a good used stator from one of those part numbers if I can use it. Anybody have any experience swapping stators like Im talking about.
