Mercury 850 loosing spark

I have a mutt of an outboard. It's part Merc 800 with a Merc 850 powerhead. The boat rubs for a while then it looses spark. Let it sit 30 mins or so and you get spark back. When I just lost it I went and jumped the wires on the switch box and the coil was sparking. However it was 30 mins after it stalled out. Any ideas? I am thinking coil but not positive. Also when you hit the throttle the fast idle lever come up any help there would also be appreciated

Sounds like the battery cd ignition from your description...either battery voltage is falling below 10v,the coil or switcbox is failing from internal problems. Only way you can test is to check it when it breaks...

How do you test them?

Still fighting with the boat. Put the cdi kit on it. Had good spark ran for a bit then died. It has spark at the coil and on the number 1 cylinder but not 2 3 or 4. While testing and checking over parts we lost spark on all the plugs. Only have it at the coil now. Any ideas would be appreciated I'm pulling out my hair trying to get this thing going

Checked carbon pin in distributer cap?
