1757489 is the serial number. I am showing 1964? The guy that has it is saying it is a 1977. All the markings look to me 60's. Can anyone please confirm the year of this outboard please. Thank you.

It looks like a 60s motor by the serial number.....The blue decals are 1977 and the white are 1964...

Something is wrong with that chart.
A 1960's 85 would be a 6 cylinder (see the "six" on the white decals).
A 4 cylinder 85 would be at least in the 1970's,
and is changed to 75 in the 80's when it was prop rated.

Probably right as the motors listed above are 4 cylinders. They probably didn't edit after a copy and paste while building the chart.

Chef - How many cylinders is the motor you're looking at? 4 or 6?

Unless you are a vintage restoration person with deep pockets, I would say if he charges more than what its worth in aluminum scrap, pass on it.

Even several of the Merc motors from 1978 to about 1988 is getting problematic in certain critical parts.

I recommend something in the 1989 to 1997 range if you can go up to 100/115 hp if you insist on a Merc motor.

Not sure about 70 to 90 hp for Mercs.

If you don't mind defecting to OMC, plenty of 70 hp to 115 hp good options for 1979 to 1998.

He is asking 200.00. From the pictures I doubt it is running. I do dable in restoring some. Redid a 79 Merc 50 hp and amd working on a 1971 Evinrude 50 hp and a 1960 Evinrude 75hp Starflite V4. I was thinking more like 50.00. But he is insisting on 200.00. If for some reason these were unique and rare and worth some money I would be interested, 85hp 6 cylinder seemed kind of unique. I think I will let this one go. Especially since it is 4 hours round trip. Thank you everyone for your help!!!

Wise decision.

They guy is either Lying thru his teeth, or has no clue about Mercury Outboards.

Do you have a link to an ad? Just to see what it looks like and what he says.

But you probably made the right choice. Or rather no choice.

It is on the Danville VA Craigslist under boat parts. He has changed his ad now to say it needs some wires hooked up and a fuel pump......still 200.00. Definitely a bit sketchy.
