Mercury 8hp 9.9hp carb

I have a mercury 8hp 4 stroke 2007.

I'm servicing the engine including pulling and stripping the carbs.

Looking at the parts catalogue the only difference between the 8hp and the 9.9hp is the main jet and main jet retainer.

I am considering buying the parts to just experiment with it.

Anyone here ever tried anything like this.

The difference is NEVER just the jetting in the carb. The carb is jetted differently because of other differences.

What about if I replace the whole carb with a 9.9 carb of the same year?

It will (may) only be correct if the carb body itself is different, and then if it?s the only difference. Sometimes the carb is the only difference, sometimes it may include the timing, cam, valves, compression, bore, etc can be different.

You need to look very closely at the part numbers to see what matches up and what doesn?t.
