Finally got the year straightened out at the dealer today,it was sold to me as a 78 it's a 77 after all/I would have bought it anyway.Theres a knob at the end of the tiller it can screw in and out just wondering what is it's used for?any ideas about this anyone? When I got the motor there was no hose and tank with it,so I bought a new hose and the dealer gave me an old merc tank, got it at home and shook and rattled a fair amout of ice out of it its quite an old thing sanded it and primed it today,,theres a baffle in there and my beleif is there might be some dirt or water behind this baffle does the pick up or suction line go right to the bottom of the tank if so I'm worriying that the hose may pick up some dirt.If I can manage to remove that black top outlet or hose pick up on the tank will I have to get some kind of gasket to put it back on or should I leave it be and hope for the best in the spring?? I was given an old metal tank as well, I took it to local radiator shop and they chemical/heat cleaned the inside of the tank for about $10. I primed and sprayed the outside with endura paint. As a good measure I used a tank sealer from the local auto parts store after I hand cut a new gasket for the fuel gauge.

Hi,thanks for the reply.I did take the gas gauge off, the screws were real easy to remove and the gasket didnt get affected.Looked inside and everything looks pretty clean, even polished that little plastic lens with some stuff I had bought years ago to give a new clearer look to plastic worked great...the pick up tube has a very fine mesh on it ,my guess is that if dirt there is,it wont come through that screen,,,my only worry now is to find out if the tank leaks I'll fill it up someday when my truck is empty and if it does leak I'll just pour it into the truck's tank..Mike
