Hey guy's hoping someone can help. It's been 30 years since I got to play with a 2 stroke.
1971 Mercury 9.8. Will idle/troll all day long.
When run at full throttle it will die after a minute. If I pump the bulb it will start right up and run for another minute. Obviously it's running out of fuel but where to start looking?
And yes my vent screw is open.

It's probably the fuel pump but may be an air leak in the fuel line leading to the pump. I have two 9.8's from 1971 and one has a fuel pump in the carb and the other has a seperate one mounted on the cowling retainer. Which one is yours. Either way just open it up and look for crud or broken gaskets or diaphrams. I've never been inside one with the seperate pump though so it may be different.
Eric

Eric, thanks for the reply.
Mine is the externally mounted one.
I'll take it apart and see how it looks.
I did replace the fuel line leading to the pump.
