Shortly after buying this outboard I checked the lower unit oil and it was clean but pretty low. I topped it off at that point.
Around the same time I pulled the lower off the check the impeller and found a lot of water/oil milkshake sludge around the water pump area, so there is something leaking gear oil in that area.
I reassembled it and have ran around 3 tanks of gas through it. I checked the lower unit oil recently and it was just a little bit low, so not a fast leak. The oil that came out was pretty clean, so water is not getting into the lower, just leaking out into the water pump area.
I'm going to change the impeller this week and I would like to fix the leak at the same time. What is the most likely culprit? Shift shaft or drive shaft seal?
