I have a merc 9.8 mid 80s. I Started it out of water for about 20 seconds & burned up the pump. Replaced the pump but it is not pumping water thru the motor & out of the little hole at top right of motor. I can put the ears on the flush hole with the hose running & water comes out of the little hole just fine. I have flushed & backed flushed numerous times with air & water thinking there was old impeller parts stuck. I forced water up the copper water line into the motor where the pump would normally pump it, but I cannot get it to flow thru. I suspect something is plugged but dont know where. Any body got any ideas. Thanks for any help

are you sure you place the pin that holds the impeller correctly?
Because it happened to me once

Re: Mercury 9.8 not pumping water

At the top of the copper tube under the powerhead, there is a plastic washer and rubber seal. If you can not get water through the copper tube, it is possible that it is plugged at that point. Also broken pieces of pump impeller can plug there too. To get to that point and clean it out, you will need to remove the lower cowling and take the powerhead off.

If you want to clean out the rest of the system while you have the powerhead off, remove the exhaust cover and baffle plus the cylinder block cover. Be careful unbolting these covers as it is easy to break a bolt off.

Good luck and great little motors!
