Hi, I just purchased a 9.8 Mercury. The Cowl has 75 printed on it. The sn# is 9410903. From what I have found so far I think it is an 85 or 86. I got it at a good price, but now I'm not so sure. There is (was)a hose running from an outlet on the engine to a nipple inside the cover at the side of the engine. I am thinking that this is for water?? for cooling???. The hose was slightly damaged (melted) at one end. Is this a sign that the impeller is not working correctly? Apart from a few scratches is seems to be in very good condition. It starts first pull and there are no problems going into forward or reverse. Any thought anyone has on the hose etc. Would be really appreciated.

Kevin

I have one ?.
Is their water streaming out of th side of the motor while it is running. If their is not then you have burned up your water pump. Im guessing by the way you have the hose that it does go to your water pump for the water to stream out.

The supply comes in through the bottom of the block. That sounds like the pee hose. They're attached with a plastic nipple at the top of the motor. If that melted, it overheated. That's basically an overflow used as an indicator that the water pump is working. Rebuild the water pump and hope for the best.

Anytime you buy a used motor you should change the gearlube, replace the sparkplugs, and rebuild the water pump (unless there is documentation that these have been done recently).

Thanks for the replies,

I have ordered the shop manual, hopefully I will have it in about a week.

The melted hose..
The outlet from the engine is not melted the hose was only slightly melted but is not usable. Can anyone tell me where the water is pumped from on the engine? Is there an inlet somewhere.
I will replace the pump plugs and gear lube anyway. Does this engine have a pump or is it impeller driven?

Can anyone recommend a good parts dealer that will ship to Ireland. I want to get the parts ordered asap so I will have them when I get the manual.

Thanks again,

Kevin

The impeller is part of the pump. It's located on the driveshaft, just above the split between the gearcase and the mid-section. It's housed in a small waterpump assembly, held on by two nuts. The water comes in through the stainless steel grate on the underside of the anti-ventilation plate... Should be relatively easy and inexpensive to replace.
- Scott
