Got a 9.8 Mercury here... serial number 7095363. Cant seem to get it to start. Got lots of spark, but no fuel. Cleaned the carb but plugs are still not even wet. Any help wouldbe great!
How did you clean the carb? It should be disassembled, cleaned thoroughly, and reassembled usinf all new gaskets, needle and seat. Be sure to check the float level.
Have to agree gumed up float or bowl If you pump the bulb and it gets hard and no gas in the carb then take it apart get spray carb cleaner if not rebuild the whole carb even better. Then check lines for cracks inside the cowel as well as from the tank. Check any fuel filters or screens for debri. Do Not Use Starting fluid in your engine to start it unless you want a bigger problem than you already have!
If you are going to do the carb, do the fuel pump side as well and save yourself the hassle of doing it later and make sure that the choke is fully closed. With the choke pulled full on, even being open a few mm will make this engine hard to start. Adjust the cable if you have to, to make sure it is closing fully.
I disasmbled the carb when I cleaned it. Nothing seemed to be gummed up, and there was lots of gas in the carb. I removed the piece in the center of the float bowl. Very clean inside, it kinda baffles me. Im sure its somthing that can be fixed easly. I also need to find an impeller. thanks for the info! ill keep tinkering away!
thanks for your help..... I have had the carb looked over by a mechanic. Nothing wrong with it. However when its cold and i first pull it, i can get it to run for about 3 seconds. the choke seems to make it worse. The air screw is 1 1/4 turns out. Also, if I spray some gas in the carb, it fires right up and screams away! and the kill switch doesnt seem to work?! any ideas?
also, sorry if this is a stupid question, but does this have a reed plate?
