mercury 90hp what year?

I've just purchased a mercury blue band 6 cylinder in line. The owner told me it was a 1984. The serial number is 8054657. The boat yard were also unsure how old it is. The front part of the cowl has Mercury in red with a white border. It has "900" on the right underside of the cowl. From a pic posted on this site it looks like a 1979 model, although i hope i'm wrong. Can anyone confirm?

That's an Australian built engine, around 1979. The manual I have doesn't list the Australian build numbers, I have infered it using the manual with US numbers and years, and a parts catalogue with all the numbers, but not the years. Does that makes sense? <br /><br />Chris.........
