hi folks just got my 1st boat a 1970 glastron 16 ft with a 1966 merc95 hp
i got a great deal on it free,so i got antsy and decided i wanted to see if it would run charged batt got some fresh gas/oil mix,out the muffs over the inlet holes on the bottem of the case, with a garden hose attached the motor started right up and runs great im very impressed but i noticed it didnt have a pee hose on it,there are 2 square holes towards the top of the drive shaftcase that appeared to be exaust should i have water comming out of them 2 square holes?
so anyways i took lower unit off and the impeller and case looks brand new
everything is very clean im just concerned because i didnt see water spitting out of a pee hole
i would love to hear some thoughts about this issue
thsnk you to all those that respond
safe boating fellows

if you mean the water pipe that comes out of the top of the impeller housing it goes straight up to the bottem side of the powerhead

I have the same issue with a 1976 Johnson 70HP that I just got with a boat. I even took a garden hose with a nozzle held tightly against the water tube and shot water up. Once the cavities in the engine fill up with water I get back pressure and no water ever comes out the outlet side.

I was thinking about taking the thermostat out of mine to see what I could see but wanted to make sure replacement gaskets are available first. Have you looked in your top end for any obstruction \ water flow?

Okay. I took the housing off of my thermostat. Inside of my 1976 70hp Johnson, I had two pressure control valves that where stuck and had sand packed around them. I removed them and the thermostate and put the cover back on to do a flow check with a garden hose and nozzle. Well it worked. So I will order a thermostat kit, clean up the pressure control valves and reassemble and see how it goes.

It definately had a tell tale from a rubber hose from a fitting at the base of the power head, (the exhaust cover to be precise), that dumps on the rear starboard side of the motor pan at the base of the powerhead. It maybe filled with a cucoon or some such blockage use compressed air to blow it out.
