i have a 1967 950 SS, the problem i have is it starts and runs, but when i use the forward lever it doesnt have any power. it is on a 66 larson with a black lever and a white lever. after starting does the black lever have to be back all the way down? sometimes the engine dies when i put the lever down. does the idle need to be increased? Thanks. any help?

The cold start lever needs to be all the way down and your carbs are either dirty or need adjustment

Thanks for answering...i am new to this old boat, when you start it with the black lever, when it comes to warm idle, you should lower the lever back down?

Yes, that lever is for starting and startup only, it advances the throttle through a cam action that also effects the shift, throttle part of the box when you try to use the shift handle for throttle.

Re: mercury 950 ss high speed problem

Running a engine proves nothing, there is no load or back pressure so the carbs can't be adjusted properly and the engine can over rev and self destruct. It will let you know the engine will run and as long as it's pumping water through the engine it could run forever. When in forward gear it should rev up to the point it will self destruct.

you have to adjust the carbs while on the water? is it ok to rev the engine in frward on muffs? the first time i took it on the water, when i got out of the wake area and i pushed the forward lever forward it didnt seem to move any faster, it just seemed like it idled, i was also lifting up the black lever at the same time. did that flood it out? thanks.

Yes- Not to high-The cold start lever only advances the throttle, like the accelerator on you car
