Mercury black max overheats at higher rpms

I have a mercury black max 175 I just purchased a week or 2 ago. It runs perfectly (idle and cruising).

Okay so heres the problem. I took it out with a friend of mine to check the overall running and operation of the boat. We just putted around the lake for about 15 mins or so then went to open her up some. Not long in i heard the temp alarm go off and noticed the temp gauge didn't register this. I still shut off the engine and let it cool. Crunk back up and idled back to the trailer. Brought it home fixed the temp gauge, lowered the foot and checked to confirm the impeller had been changed like the previous owner told me( said it was changed no more than 2 months ago by a reputable marine shop) it was in prestine condition housing an all. I removed the t-stats and checked them on the stove in water they worked at around 140. Then flushed the engine from the top with the foot off. And then inspected the poppet valve. Then went out with my family and it did the same thing except the temp gauge worked this time lol. Went home and did some more checking. I noticed the telltale stream was pretty hot while I was out there. And also hot at idle with a garden hose. I do have a water pressure gauge and can see the t-stats open on it. But it does not overheat at idle at all. I removed the poppet valve and replaced the cover just to see what happened. The engine felt much cooler at idle and the stream wasn't hot anymore. I'm not really sure but that's what I'm thinking the culprit may be .Maybe stuck closed?

Sorry it's all long and drawed out just trying to give the details.

I can provide details and serial # upon request. I have a high knowledge of mechanics and can do most anything necessary to repair. I just need the outboard experienced community to point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

sounds like a poppet but you didn't say what tha water pressure (in tha lake under a load) was at idle and wfo or close to it?....

don't rely on tha gauge for an accurate temp reading........... number wise.

Water pressure is low at idle maybe 5 to 10psi...at speeds it raises to 20-25...no numbers on my temp gauge just a reference. Temp gauge on one head alarm on the other they both showed I was getting hot

5 ta 7 is good.. 20 ta 25 may be a little on tha higher side.. look for at least 14 ta 18 on big end.. those are tha "normal" pressures.. i'd go with a poppet kit first.... not to pricey and new can't hurt nothin'............. jmo.

jan... be sure ta "stake" tha new grommet in tha block... dremel is excellent for de burring tha old stake marks.

Leaking head gaskets can cause overheating.----Compression test costs very few beer tokens.

I'll check compression like you said. Runs and cranks perfectly but easy to check and I'll replace the poppet assembly and seat. Then see what happens. Thank you all for the quick response and information. Soon as I get done I'll post results.
