Ok guys... Please don't laugh. I'm just curious since I have one now.. What's the deal with the "Black Max" series Mercury motors? What's the difference in that series and regular series motors? Is is just a snazzy name Mercury came up with or is it a performance issue or what? Thanks for your answers!! This site is AWESOME!!

Re: Mercury BLACK MAX...

Black Max was the introdution name for the V6 in 1976. It was a 175hp. Just as the new 4 strokes are called 'Verado' (seriously cool engines too), it's just some marketing types getting their jollies.<br /><br />Smee again...........

Re: Mercury BLACK MAX...

I have often wondered the same thing, I have a 150 Black Max Xr2 and I've seen other motors that were the same just didn't have the Black Max xr2 logo on the side. I also agree "Nothing sounds like a Black Max!"<br />CU<br /><br />------------------<br />RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

Re: Mercury BLACK MAX...

I'm looking for a place to get this thread started and this seems like as good of place as any. I have an '83 150 Merc Black Max on an '83 Wellcraft V20. This boat is in DIRE need of an alternator. This motor (so I am told) has no alternator. Is there any way to add alternator?

Assuming not, what is out there that can be used to charged batteries while off shore? Seems stranage that a boat built for coastal fishing wouldn't have a charging system.

Looking for to ideas on how to solve this problem.

Nick Thomas.
