Hello - I have a Merc Classic 50 that seems to have an inconsistent water stream. I have heard various remedies and am most concerned with the following:

How to check impeller

A thread covered here regarding cooling tube: http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...28701-1987-mercury-45hp-50-classic-thermostat - I need to spend some time looking but am mostly curious if the aluminum version of this part was found.

Any other suggestions are welcome. I do not believe there is an obstruction in the line since it does get a good stream at times. I have never taken the lower unit off of this motor (or any motor, for that matter) so any information on this process would be helpful as well.

I really hesitate to give advice, but you need to change the impeller on a fairly consistent basis. I would suggest what these experienced Mercury owners told me to do and that is buy a proper service manual for your motor and watch some U-Tube videos. This will give you enough information to get you to change out an impeller and rebuild your water pump. I won't be a hypocrite and tell you I have learned it all from these sources. I was also blessed by finding a retired Merc mechanic that helps me with back up if I get in trouble.

welcome aboard

change your impeller if you have not done it yet. during the impeller change, back-flush the cooling passages.
