I anticipated a powerhead rebuild on my 1988 Mercury Classic 50, see my other post, and bought a used 1995 classic 40 powerhead off ebay. The powerhead looks very clean and the seller said the engine had electrical problems but the powerhead was good.
The 1995 powerhead looks identical to the 1988 45 powerhead with the exception of the hose which goes from the fuel pump directly to the block on the 1988 45. The 1995 40 block does not have a hole on the front of the power head or the brass fittting like the 45 has. Also I looked up the fuel pump for the 40 and it does not have the extra connection just a brass plug and no hose. The carb setup is also different on the 40 do to the oil injection and the missing electric choke on the later model.
My question is can I use a fuel pump off a 1990 40 with out the extra hose to the block? What does that hose do on the 45 and I wonder why Mercury changed it on the later models.
Also will not connecting the oil pump up cause a problem on the 45 leg?
Any insights anyone has on this would be appreciated.
