mercury commamder 3000 no high idle/advance start

Hi there, im new to this forum but I enjoy reading the topics and now that I have a issue I can participate. I have a commander 3000 controller and the advance throttle button doesn't seem to be working and it wont go into advance throttle to warm up. I was wondering where do I start looking and what am I looking for to repair. I haven't been brave enough yet to start dismantling until I have some input from some that may know more than me. Thanks in advance for the positive input.

Are you saying when the throttle only button is pushed in that the throttle can't be moved to increase RPM or as the throttle is moved it goes into gear?

yes that is correct , as soon as the button is pushed and the lever is advanced it does nothing.
