Ok so I got some new cables for the control box and was able to connect the gear shift side without removing the assembly but the idle lever and throttle speed cable I have to unscrew the assembly to install the cable, and in the process I think I threw something out of whack. The gear shift cable comes out level out of the control box but the throttle cable seems to come out at a downward angle. When I am in the water the motor will work in forward gear but I have to push the lever down way past where I used to to hit full throttle. When I try to go in revers you can hear the reverse start to catch but then the throttle cable starts to speed the motor up before reverse sucessfully catches. I tried re hooking up the gear shift cable and the same thing is happening but I am not sure what would be causing this. I need some definate help as this is a pain to try and run the boat in the lake. Thank you

Re: Mercury control box

It is an older tan Mercontrol unit that is a tanish color on the exterior.

The throttle cable does move up and down some as you advance/retard the throttle. Mine does anyway.

Your shift cable needs to be adjusted.

Do you have a manual to use for cable adjustment and what Merc are you working on? You don't need to get on the water to check.

its an 83 merc 50 horsepower. But the different is both the old cables were level at neutral and no throttle but now at the same position for some reason the throttle cable it at a definite downward angle.

I think I recall seeing that before. Just ensure that the cable isn't binding and moves freely when you move it and button her back up. There aren't any places to mess up. The center shaft goes under the screw and the round barrel goes in the slot which is usually occupied by the barrel of the shifter also.

I don't understand what is in red. Are you saying you didn't split the box? I still think you need to adjust the cables. The throttle cable housing does move as you move the control lever. On my control the cables are not parallel in neutral.
