Mercury control Merc 200

My 1975 Merc200 has remote control shift and throttle. It's the typical Mercury control for that year and model. When shifting into gear,does the shift lever also control the throttle, or are the shift and throttle levers completely independent?<br />The reason I'm asking is that they seem to function completely imdependent of each other.<br />Also, what is the function of the flush plug on this motor. Would I flush water through it or just remove it and use the typical earmuff flush mechanism?

Use the normal Water Muffs on the engine. Keep rpm's low.<br /><br />As for the controls. Is there just one large lever? Along with 1 small one that raises up?<br /><br />TMD

Large arm is shift and throttle. Smaller arm is simply a neutral-only warm-up lever. Make sure small arm is locked down before shifting into gear...<br />- Scott

Marine Doc: Do I leave the flush plug in when using the earmuffs.<br />Yes, there's the one large lever and then a second small lever. When I move the large lever it does shift the motor from neutral to forward or reverse. However the motor speed does not change.

Greetings Soxfan, I too have the flush plug on my lower unit, and asked the mechanic at local mercury dealership...he said that is one way to flush the engine (?did not have muffs back then?), there is a threaded adaptor that fits into port (after removing plastic threaded plug) for flushing...he said either way is okay to use...
