Mercury Fuel Bowl Baffle Question

I am in the process of rebuilding the carbs on my 1992 40hp 4cyl Mercury and I noticed that on my bottom carb the fuel bowl baffle is broken, this is probably the reason my float was sticking causing fuel to pour out of the vent.
My question is what is the purpose of the baffle, Ive never seen them on any jonnyrude or older merc carbs before. Do I need this part? or can I just leave it out.

Also could anybody tell me the correct float height setting for this motor.

Thank You

Re: Mercury Fuel Bowl Bafflle Question

Float height depends on what carburetor you have installed. If you PM me with your engine s/n and email address, I will send you a copy of the service manual.

Re: Mercury Fuel Bowl Baffle Question

Thank you for the float information.
Any information about this baffle will help. Is it needed or not?
The part is obsolete according to the places I usually order parts from so it will be a pain to hunt down.

Yes, the baffle missing will effect the engine running in rough water
