Hi all, I figured this would be a good place to ask this question since this board helped me with my motor a few months ago.

A friend of mine had her purse stolen yesterday. One of the items in her purse was her boat keys and she doesn't have a spare set. How can she go about getting new keys for her motor? The motor is a Merc 225 offshore, 1997 model. I purchased spare keys for my motor at a local dealer using the number off the key, unfortunatly my friend has no numbers from her old key.

Thanks for any help.... Rob

Without the numbers, I doubt that she will be able to get new keys.

Is this a console mounted switch or is it in the controls. If it is console mounted, you could easily just replace the ingnition switch with a replacement from boaters world or similar retailer. If it is in the console, I am not sure, but a dealer could replace it for you. Just a few ideas.

Good Luck

Re: Mercury Ignition Key

Most dealer shops keep a full set of keys on hand for customers that forget to leave their keys when they drop off their boat for service. Happens alot! If that's not an aftermarket switch, there are just 12 possibilities. The numbers range from 1A to 2F. The lettered keys are similar, but have different teeth. If a 1A slides in but doesn't turn, the 2A will be the one. Only a couple of bucks apiece.
