That would be good for the engine so I do believe you have needle seat problems or not likely a cracked carb body JMO Electronic fuel pumps are frowned apon for the exact same reasom your having No stop fuel flow when things fail creating a fire hazard and more

dear oh dear

The primary pickup had a broken join in it. It was on the opposite side to the bolt in the picture,
The washer on the bolt was getting stuck on the broken join!!
I was unable to move the "primary pickup plate" enough, so when I raise the RPM to try achieve BTDC setting it didn't work.
So so now I have it set on BTDC 2 degrees. I couldn't go any than 2 degrees cause the pickup plate run out of adjustment..
Mercury manual states:
-73 inline's 2-4 degree's BTDC
-74 inline's 1-3 degree's BTDC
-75 onwards mostly 4-6 BTDC..

Hopefully all is good now..
Thanks for everyones help! This forum is
Lifesaver! :)

You should start your own thread.

When you say idle tube, do you mean the short rubber hose visible on top of the carb? If so, those are backdrag hoses, and the PO has disabled the backdrag circuit. You may replug them or leave them as they are. It makes no difference, IMHO.
