Re: mercury kill switch

The kill switch is usually on the remote control...turning the Key to Off shorts out the ignition. On my later model engine a black wire with a yellow stripe is the wire that gets connected to ground via Off on the control box (Quicksilver 2000 or 3000) ignition switch. Sometimes Merc keeps the same color code for the same function over the years and yours may be the same color.

Re: mercury kill switch

There is usually a mercury switch under the cowling, on the cowling support. This switch will short the switchboxes to ground, if the motor is tilted too far. Trace the black/yellow wire (or orange wire on older models) from the switchboxes to the cowling support to find the switch. They usually look like blue tootsie rolls, with a single wire.

Mounts between cyl 3 and 4 ignition coil directly behind switchboxes. Mine's black, 83 as well. View attachment 122518See pic

Where the rectifier normally mounts that is just a terminal strip. The rectifier/regulator is mounted down at the bottom right of switchboxes. It is off of a kohler small engine. No longer have that setup, turns out it was only a half wave rectifier and backfed my stator, Long story short, new stator and two switchboxes later, back to running unregulated charging system.

Good eye

Re: mercury kill switch

I have an old 1969?? 50 HP mercury, that I inherited, and it is a manual start. It has a kill switch wire coming out of the base of the cowling and it is putting out voltage as I found out by touching it. WQuestion, can I use this source to charge the battery?
Thank you. cappytoo
