Mercury Mark 55 lower end re-assembly - gear positioning

I am in the process of re-assembling the lower unit back onto the main engine section - I would like advice as to how to position the gear shift shaft on the bottom - for example, should it be in neutral position, in gear forward drive or reverse - also any advice about reassembly many thanks.
