Mercury model number

I hate being seen asking this, as it pertains to those goofy black motors. But, I am trying to help a friend ID his merc. Unlike the Johnnyrudes, I cannot find a site to ID them. I must say, the outboardbooks.com sure is an easy site to navigate compared to these mercs. Anyway, what site can I use to ID these ugly black motors?

I couldn't find it on either of those sites. I am assuming it is a 70s model based on the coloring, and the maxrules doesn't go before 1980, and it isn't included there. The other one didn't seem to have it either.
The model number is 5973716, so lets just work from there.

He says it is a 25, and he claims it has blue stripes on the top.

Its a 1982 if it's 25HP. Boy was that ever tuff!

I had mistakenly put that the serial number was the model number, but I don't think that changed much. Anyway, why does the maxrules site not show it as an '82?
