Re: Mercury oil injection operation question.

I see the cover. Looks like the switchboxs have got to come off to get at it. Thanks for the help.

Hello waynelk

You should be able to slide the cover out. **** the top of poppit plate out and let the bottom part stay flush with the engine. You should have a nice angle to slide it out without moving switch boxes. When you goto install it do the same.
But make sure you seat the new poppit plunger into the grommet/seal and not to compress in unseated. It will be a 'feel' thing and should be no tension (mabey a VERY small amount) when you mate the poppit assb'y unto the engine block. If you feel like you have to push hard to mate it all up and to start the screws , its not seated.

Before you start to assemble the poppit guts, screw the screw into the black plunger all the way down. So you have a nice pre made hole so when you goto assemble all the guts you wont have to fight to start new threads while holding everything into place.

Also make sure when you assemble the poppit 'guts', the plunger, retaining washer, spring, metal plate, diaphram/thick black disk. That when you screw the screw in that the black tip of the plunger goes threw the metal plate part and fully compresses onto the back of the diaphram. Sometimes when you screw it down, it will catch on the metal plate and feel like it seated but it is not.

Iv'e seen torque specs for those 4 bolts but I urge you 'not' to listen to them.Hand snug and if you have a small leak around the gaskets then you can always go little by little by hand until it stops leaking.

Sorry if it was a long post

I am removing the oil injection on a 1997 mercury 150 xl. When taking off the pressure hose coming from the engine to the 3 gallon tank, do I just block it off? Will this harm anything and what do I use to block it off? Thanks
