I'm thinking about buying one but heard they had a reputation to be called "opti-bomb". Anyone know why?

Re: Mercury Opti-Max 225 question

Mercury are awesome engines, as are most O/B engines produced. The amount of research and development that goes into an engine before it ever reaches production is incredible. Do a little research on your own to make an informed decision. By far, the vast majority of problems with any boat engine will fall on the owner/operator. Neglect, lack of maintenance, extreme abuse, etc. Not to say that there aren't extenuating circumstances, but if you buy a new one and do the proper break-in, follow the maintenance schedule, and run it like a normal human, you will never have a problem with it.

Re: Mercury Opti-Max 225 question

Optimax for Mercury like FICHT for OMC was new direct injection technology and in the early going both manufacturers had some snags in
"some" of the many horsepower variations of those engines. Over time those issues were worked out and they became good motors. FICHT became upgraded and is now Evinrudes ETEC which is an excellent engine as is the Optimax.
