Re: mercury outboard carburetor body throttle shaft bushings

IDK but, before I even opened it (cuz I knew it would be a long road once opened up) I seafoamed the thing to death, soaked it over night, yada yada yada....Went back like 5,6,7 times, doing comp tests and leak downs, always comparing/sanity checking myself and gauges with other holes etc.

#4 would not come back to life in the leak down, just dead dead dead. But each time i had did both tests (comp, leak down) within sec's/min's of each other on #4 (as well as all the holes), #4 had around 90 psi consistently with almost unregistered leak downs around but above intake/exhaust bores and at or damn close to TDC.

It's just out of round with scuffing up fairly deep I reckon... I should mic the cylinder I suppose but just haven't, just figured whatever....and shipping it out to bore.

Bought some bronze bushings (0.25" ID x 0.3125" OD x 0.75" L) from a local hardware store but had to open them up a tad (9/32" drill bit) to fit the standard shaft. I wanted the wall thickness (comes out to approx 0.016") fairly thin so as to not have (or minimize) any changes in the air flow characteristics by adding a large/r flat edge of a bushing face recessed in a seat inside the throat, so this size works out best IMO. Had to take out (5/16" drill bit) a little from the body to fit the OD of the new bushings. So basically 3 custom sizes, I made the linkage side bushing as long as possible of course.. Just pressed/lock tighten them in, the middle bushing was a bit of a pain.

I don't have the replacements shafts yet but, the ends of the old shaft didn't wear so they still made for a nice fit check.

Courious 'bout this. We do comp and leak down on fresh motors before a reed plate is even installed and see very, very, (if any at all) little difference in tha numbers????

I think he is saying the low leak down numbers were caused by cylinder wall damage caused by carburetor problems. That is reasonable. How do you get reliable leak down and compression numbers before the rings are seated?
