Ran without oil not on purpose of course, I always check it when I put in gas at the docks, just forgot. Anyway was running and it shut itself down. Restarted it and ran again for about 20 30 seconds and it shut down both times by slowly losing power and then stopped. Got oil on gas docks, not mercury because all they had, and filled with 2 quarts. Started up and is running just like nothing happened except at low rpm, like 1000, I hear a ticking from the head I think but can’t tell where it is coming from. I don’t hear it so much when I put it into neutral. it doesn’t really change with rpm that I can tell, I can’t really hear it when I speed up.
The thing is, after putting the oil in it, we drove it up the lake and sat for a few hours and drove back no problems just the ticking. Wouldn’t scuffed piston skirts cause failure in that amount of time? Like I said, no issues with power or starting at all. One thing that I also wanted to add was a year or so ago we found one of the spark plugs had been tightened too tight by the previous owner when we were changing them and it would not tighten properly. We got a kit and did the spark plug sleeve deal and it went in and has been fine. Could this have an issue now with the motor getting heated up or something? Just trying to put all info out there for help. Thanks for your time in reading.
Any help on what it could be? I know I can take it to a marine mechanic and have them go over it for 500 but was trying to see if something I can figure out first and if so then take to be repaired. I am pretty hand with the tools and have done my own work for water pumps and such. Thanks for your time.
