Mercury Outboard runs but after several stops wont go above 2000 RPM. Mercury 175. 2 Stroke. Im looking at a boat for a friend, have worked on outboards for years. Never seen this issue. Motor runs great right starts up, cruised about 5K rpm about 45 mph. Ran for 15 minutes. I asked him to stop like he did when he had this issue and wait a minute. Cranked back up ran about 15 more minutes. Did this another time and ran about 5 minutes and stopped. This time, it cranked back up and wouldnt get above 2k rpm. No over heat alarm. Got a reading on the heads at 150 degrees. Motor still idles fine. Rode all the way back to the ramp at 2K rpm. It never acted like it was starving for gas. Any tips on what to look at here? At first i thought it might be the carbs, now Im thinking its a sensor, but not really sure where to test. PSI checked out good on all cylinders. Ive done research online for this and not much info. Any help is appreciated.
