I am looking at a 2018 pontoon with this engine on it. Assuming it was properly maintained how reliable are these engines?

Good motors but not very DIY friendly and some dealers wont service them due to special training

If you want to maintain it yourself, get the Diacom software. I look after one for a friend, and I have no 'special training', they are just another engine. The lower unit is a kin to a Mercruiser stern drive gear housing, and I have pulled one apart with just the tools for those. The only other issues Steve had was a failed switch for neutral/in gear. An easy fix, $30 for the switch and about 30 minutes of my time. Found that with the Diacom software. And a damaged wire in the engine harness that eventually corroded and failed. Stopped the engine from cranking. Found that with just standard troubleshooting techniques.

The most I would do would be winterize it as a DIY the rest would have to go to a boat mechanic. Sounds like these are descent engines. Thanks

To winterize, make sure it's properly upright (not trimmed up a bit), flush it with fresh water, drop and change the gear oil. Either run a trickle charger on the battery or remove it and store it somewhere warm... Cover with a tarp and walk away...
