Mercury Prop Re-Keyed for Evinrude, but Still won't Fit

Hi all,

I had a stainless steel mercury prop re-keyed for my 150 HP Evinrude (at the suggestion of my Evinrude dealer/mechanic). The splines (I think thats what you call 'em) fit and the prop goes on nicely. The problem is that the prop takes up too much room on the shaft and doesn't allow enough threads to allow me to get the nut down far enough and the cotter pin on.

I was told that I would have to try different thrust washers to maybe get it down far enough. Any other suggestions, greatly appreciated.

Thanks

P.S. I have no previous mechanical experience, but would like to get this done myself.

gidrac, Talk to the people who rekeyed the prop.My guess is they changed the splines in the hub. They should be able to sell you the correct thrust washer.(I thought it all came in one kit.)

DHP

Is the prop goinmg all the way back onto the shaft? I have seen some re-hubed Merc props that had to have some of the spline area drilled out at the back to allow it to go all the way in.

To make a Merc prop fit an E/J you shorten the slpines. If the slpines arent shortened enough the prop will not "seat" far enough on the shaft.

Look at the forward area. If its done properly the prop hub will fit to the gearcase as an E/J prop.

Which Merc prop did you start with?

Hi and thanks for your replies.

I spoke with the dealer who had the prop re-keyed for me and he said he doesn't know which thrusst washer would work, if any and it would be trial and error.

I'm not sure if the splines were preventing the prop from sitting all the way down. I had a marina (different from the one I got the prop re-keyed from) try to put the prop on for me. He doesn't specialize in J/E, in fact he is more of a jet ski guy. He only described the problem to me, and didn't offer much else.

To answer Dhadly's question, the prop was bought to fit a Mercury Force 125 HP, approx year of engine - 1992.

If these are my only two options (finding the right thrust washer, or drill out the splines), then in any of thses cases my guess is that it is going to cost me at least $150. In that case, I'm thinking it might be best to just buy a new aluminum prop for $120 and sell the stainless steel prop.

I would say that the person you paid the 150.00 to, and said it would fit had the problem. I just did one for a Force, had to make a thrust washer, prop maker and prop shop said it would fit, last one I will do.

Oh, a Force prop. To be honest we've never tried to convert one so you may indeed have to fool with the thrust washer set up.

What kind of diameter is it?

Well, not sure if this is what you're asking, but the aluminum prop thats on my Evinrude (the original) is 14.5 X 9.

Wow, a 9" pitch. This must be some big boat we're trying to push. Anyway, I was curious about the diameter of the Force prop. If its way smaller it may not work very well.

Sorry, not sure of the dia on the stainless steel Merc. I'm probably just going to purchase a new aluminum prop.

I noticed that there are two companies that have the prop I need - Vortex and Michigan Match. Any recommendations on either?

Thanks

I'd like to sell the re-keyed stainless steel prop. Any ideas on what I can sell it for? Would anyone want to even buy it since it has been re-keyed?
