Here's my tale of adventure getting a prop off. Also search in this and other forums for words like stuck and prop and you'll find a lot of stories and advice. Good luck!
Stuck prop thread

Re: MERCURY PROP REMOVAL

Hey D. Why did you have to remove the thrust washer? Once you got the prop off, you were home free.

On removing the thing. Don't want to use heat as it will/can mess up your seals in the lower unit. A real good penetrating oil over several days with pressure on the prop (wheel puller) should work. I use Kroil....stands for Kreeping (creeping) oil. Comes out of Tennessee and machinists in industry swear by it....that's how I got onto it. Is said to penetrate to within 1 millionth of an inch.

Anyway with a puller permanently affixed to the prop and a daily dosing with Kroil the sucker should give up in a couple of days.

A good blast with a hair dryer would help things along.

And as stated, when going back on, GREASE THE DAMN SHAFT!

Mark

Re: MERCURY PROP REMOVAL

Hey Mark - I don't know if I actually removed the thrust washer or not - I don't think so. Like you say, I think I just put the new prop on. It was a while ago and I can't really remember what I ended up doing. I've had the new prop on for a season A-OK. I do grease the shaft now and just remove it once a year just to keep it honest.

One thing I probably posted in a different thread - for me, the prop (probably original) was less than pristine anyway, so it wasn't a tragedy to have to replace it. If I had it to do over again, I would have just carefully cut it off rather than mess with trying to pull it off at all. The replacement was only about $60 and is a better prop for my use anyway. I would recommend that unless the prop is perfect, with a small engine like this, with fairly cheap replacements, it is not worth putting a heck of a lot of time/effort into saving the old one if it doesn't come off fairly easily. Just a thought.
