Mercury Props - differences between years?

I have 1968 Merc 1250 125 hp outboard and I'm looking for an extra prop for cruising. I know the diameter, pitch and splines I need and that it's through-the-hub exhaust. What other information do I need when searching for a used prop?

Thanks

i think any mercury prop from around the late 60's to early 80's would work. Just my thought, but not 100% sure. I think the main thing is the diameter. You pretty much have all you need.

I've references to hub diameter but its never listed on specs of the prop. I'm wondering if I buy a mercury 15 spline thru hub exhaust with the correct dia and pitch, are they all the same?

Thanks again

instead of looking from a private owner why not see if a local marine shop has a used one and pay the 60 bucks or so. I'm sure I could find one in my area as that prop is pretty common. I think the hub went bigger the later years.

Ayuh,... Yer motor uses the mid-sized hub,...

I/Os, 'n large gear case outboard props Won't fit yer's,...

Props for yer motor, top out at 'bout 13" diameter,...
Those at 14" or larger are for the large gear cases...

Re: Mercury Props - differences between years?

Your 1968 Mercury has a 4.25" (intermediate) gear case; the same as a new 75-115 motor.

It uses the same props as a new motor of like HP, and handles props up to 14" in diameter; although you won't see that large of diameter unless you get down really low in pitch(like 13 pitch).

If you look a prop for your motor, then look up a prop for a new 115, you'll see the same part number.

As a side note; the smaller HP "Bigfoot" motors also use this same intermediate gear case.

I was cross referencing the props like you suggested and found that the prop was the same but had a different hub. Is this just a minor hardware difference such as a washer or something?
