Re: mercury serial number

It is a 1980/81 motor. Can't be certain on the horsepower. If it has been changed...it was probably a 9.9.

Hey fellers,
I have found an extension kit for this outboard and wonder if this number will fit. kit number is 12426A1 . will this fit my motor ? Also does anyone know the exact year of this motor , no one can find this serial number. I think its pre 80. thanks.

Re: mercury serial number

1980 is the exact year of your motor.

"Mercury engines produced in 1980 and 1981 had the same (1980) model year designation. An engine produced in 1981 carries the 1980 starting serial number designation. All other models show the starting serial number for that model and corresponding model year."
That 5" extension kit converts a 20" shaft into a 25" model. I know it fits the late 80's and early 90's 9.9 (and various other HP 6hp through 15hp). I cannot say whether it would fit the earlier 1980 7.5/9.8hp models. I suspect not, but maybe someone else will know for sure.

The 9.8 (80's) and 9.9 (late 80's) used different lower units.
