Mercury Serial Numbers??? I must be blind!!

I just got a 2005 Mercury 8 hp outboard. I went to go get the serial number off of it for my records and noticed it is a sticker!!!!! Is there any other place the serial number is located(stamped or hidden) or if someone steals it all they have to do is rip the sticker and they are home free? Kind of a dumb design if this is the case.

It might be stamped into a small aluminum plug on the top of the motor or carb.

You can always engrave the numbers into the motor.

BTW, most stolen outboards are never recovered.
