Mercury smartcraft sc1000 sea water temp issue

Just wondering if anyone else with these gauges is having or had issues with the water temp reading being faulty. Just last season, I started getting a reading of 65 degrees C. The sensor is part of the speedo paddle wheel unit on the transom. I’ve messed about with calibration and resetting etc. Need to look into it further.

Paddle wheels and temp sensor (thermistors) are notoriously flaky components.

Don’t use transducers with temp or paddle functions built in for just that reason. Use a NMEA 2000 paddle/temp combo unit sensor for ease of replacement.

Thanks Dingbat. It was the mercury one that came with the engine package. Normally doesn’t bother me. Such things, but flicking through the menus for engine data…then seeing that the temperature of Loch Lomond (a glacial formed body of water that peaks around 11 degrees C at its warmest ) showing 68oC…annoys me occasionally !
The paddle wheel I have calibrated to as close to GPs as I can at cruising speed…but there is an option to go gps input through nmea. Thinking if doing just that. Although it means getting a separate antenna. My plotter doesn’t have nmea for some reason.
