I am experiencing current problem with my speedometer on my boat.

I have a 2004 Mercury 90 Classic outboard with an Amega Teleflex Speedometer Gauge. This is a pressure type setup connected to the motor direct.

Speedometer stopped working.

1. Ran wire thru motor input to try and clear any debri
2. Removed plastic 90 Elbow connector from motor and cleaned.
3. Removed all tubing and check for damage
4. Blew out tubing (no debri)
5. Installed new tubing
6. Installed new speedometer gauge

Speedometer is still not working.

Are there internal parts on the motor that could be damaged?
What else could be wrong?

Re: Mercury Speedometer Problem

Hi Willysnitro,

Welcome to iBoats.

Have you tried running the boat and pulling the tube off the back of the speedo? You should get a strong stream of water. If you don't, start working back from there. You could also try taking the tubing off the back of the speedo and blowing compressed air down the line. Have a friend check that the air is coming out at the engine. Are you getting any unexplained water in the boat? Also try gently blowing air up the tube, from the engine end, and see if the speedo reads.

Chris...........

Re: Mercury Speedometer Problem

Yes, I DID THAT ALREADY!

1. I removed the tube blew air from both ways thru tube good pressure.
2. Removed tube from back of speedo when moving, no air or water was coming thru.
3. I checked the tube and it is cleared and air comes thru both directions.

I assume there may be a block in the tubing section in the motor.

When I blow from the elbow into the motor little air escapes, if I blow in thru the hole on the motor air comes out a different place
than the 90 degree elbow.

I have tried running a small wire thru both entry points on the motor.

How do I address clearing this or getting air to flow to the 90 elbow from the motor. I cannot see an obstruction and have ran a wire thru as far a I could have.

Re: Mercury Speedometer Problem

maybe not obstruction but kink in line then.
low flow would not overcome a little kink, but
high pressure would maybe???

Re: Mercury Speedometer Problem

NEw tubing has been run and there is no kink in the line. New speedo, tubing and elbow to motor.

Re: Mercury Speedometer Problem

The front dowel on the gearhousing should be hollow, as a passage for the water to run to the tube for the speedo. Did it stop working after a service?

Chris...........

Re: Mercury Speedometer Problem

Stopped working after lower unit impact. No issues with motor or performance.

Re: Mercury Speedometer Problem

You may have to remove the gearbox (lower unit) and start looking deeper. That would give you a clearer view of the actual passage that's 'blocked'. Can't offer any other ideas I'm afraid.

Chris............
