mercury starting problems

iI have a 2000 40hp mercury tracker sometimes it starts right up and then sometimes it sounds like the battery is dead when it is not i can keep bumping the key and after awhile it will fire right up what could it be maybe the starter or the cilinoyd sorry cant spell please help:mad:

If it's clicking when you turn the key the selonoid should be fine. If not check your battery cables for corrosion. All the contacts need to be clean and shiny.

Thanks for the reply it is not clicking it is dragging like a weak battery but the battery is brand new and it does not drag all the time

2000 mercury tracker 40hp starter shaft pops up but will not spin motor it only does it eveyonce in awhile what could be the problem any help would be great thanks

may still be weak battery, or put a little oil on flywheel and starter gear. some times it helps just a little enought to make gears oiled not soaked.

Just Put new battery on still having the same problem noticed when the starter drags i turn off the key and the starter gear does not drop down from the flywheel could this be the bendix also noticed the person that had it before me must have had the same problem looks like someone had been beating on the starter help please:mad: Just pulled the plugs out and it turns ouver like a champ
