Re: Mercury Survey, how do you like your 2000-2001 Engine?

Howdy. My son has a 2000 Boston Whaler 17' Montauk with a 2000 Merc 90 2 stroke. His problems have been minor and well corrected by the dealer. Nevertheless he is unhappy with it.

I have a '80 Boston Whaler 17" Montauk with a 2001 Suzuki EFI 70 4 stroke. My son's unhappiness with his Merc is that it is only marginally faster than my Suzi, rougher, smellier, louder, uses almost 3 times the fuel (not to mention oil), and is comparitively hard to start. It also wont troll at idle for 6 - 8 hours at a stretch, then pop right up on plane without a whimper.

He did pay less, and his engine is lighter, but he doesn't care. . . he feels he made a poor choice.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I installed a 2001 200 Hp Merc carb on a 1986 Chapperal about 3 months ago. The owner very happy with motor. Motor ran great out of box with very little adjustments, has 60 hours on motor now.

bought a new 2000 150 carb. salt water. my only complaint is that the water coming out of the t-tale is extremely hot! can't even hold my hand in it and literally smokes when coming out. my dealer as well as mercury marine told me this was normal because this water was circulating around the block. makes me very nervous. alarm does not go off but i find this very strange. i just hope it don't burn up right after the warantee goes out! know what i mean

I dont have a 2000-2001, but a 2002 merc 115 4 stroke EFI that I bought in early July, I have no complaints so far. It sure beats the Johnson I got rid of...couldn't be happier to see that thing go. I have merc hung on back of 17' Crestliner and with just me in boat, it pushes it around 40 m.p.h. :)

I had 2001 Mariner 90 hp 2-stroke carb. The engine is loud. It is hard to start initially until I get use to the starting sequence [bulb prime, lift fast idle, push choke and start]. I also increase normal idle from 600 RPM to 800 RPM to improve starting. I almost melt the powerhead when I accidently lift the fast idle to much and the RPM climb over 5000 RPM for a short while.

I hv put 70 hrs on the engine without any trouble. Its the cheapest 90 horse around, uncomplicated and so far quite reliable.

I'm generally quite satisfied with my 2000 -Mercury 90 4-stroke.Where the engine lets me down is in the performance category. And I have to say thats my fault because when I bought the boat I didn't know 4-strokes were that much slower on take off than 2 strokes. And I like to floor the throttle on take-off and you just can't do that with a four stroke until it's been running a good 20 minutes or so. But I take solace in the fact that this engine can get my boat up to 47 mph with a correctly pitched prop, and that kind of top end speed on my boat goes beyound my expectations. If you like doing your own maintenance this is the engine for you. access to oil filter, spark plugs etc.. is easy.
For a while I'd wished I'd gone with the Ficht 90 injected. But the engine(merc90 4stroke) has been generally reliable. I've had it in the shop a few times to fix/change a couple of parts examples: fuel pump, a cracked sensor(not malfunctioning, just cracked), I've had a minor rpm loss problem which may or may not have been addressed yet. I haven't had enough time on the water to test it.

I get great service from my merc/yamaha dealer. They even send there mechanics to my
lake to fix the problem and test drive the boat with me..beat that. Lately they've changed my fuel line and primer bulb for free, and they promised they would change other parts for me free of charge next spring if I was still having an rpm problem. All of this and my warranty is way passed expiry! So all in all I'm quite satisfied.

Jacques321:
Good to see a dealer taking care of his customer...quire often I hear bad things about service from the dealer once the warranty expires. The response from a dealer that shocks me the most is "was it working before you brought it in? is it working now? well pay up!"

I am sure that the dealer you are dealing with has won your loyalty and I hope you refer everone in your area to him.

Bobby Powell

Yes I do refer a lot of people to this Merc/Yamaha dealership. They offer great after sales service, and they seem very knowledgable about there engines.
But Johnso-Evinrude engines have a better reputation around here than Merc for reliablity. Personally I've always preferred a Merc for one simple reason--they outperform other makes of engines in the same class...that simple.

It strikes me that more people around here buy Johnson/Evinrude engines than Mercs. One of the reasons is Princecraft was owned by OMC for years so this top selling boat came preconfigured with a Johnson or an Evinrude engine. Now thats going to change next spring since Brunswick Marine now owns Princecraft.

But to get back to your point you're right it sure is nice to get respect and service from the place you bought your boat. When I show up for service they know me by my name and take care of any problem I might have within a day or two.

Re: Mercury Survey, how do you like your 2000-2001 Engine?

I just purchased a 2002 duck boat and 60HP 4-stroke EFI Merc. I've only had it in the water 3 times, but it started on the first turn, ran quiet, smooth and top end speed was good. I know next to NOTHING about motors...but it did seem a little slow coming out of the hole, but perhaps that's because it's a 4-stroke?? Time will tell, I sure hope it's reliable because I DON'T have a good dealer close!

LASpeckking: I'd be happy if I could get 3 years and 2 months out of my Toyota Tacoma with only three problems!

My 2002 (early) Merc 90 has performed very well. Only time it left me stuck was when the solenoid went out. Easy fix, runs like a charm.

Recently got a quote on a '04 Merc 90 2-stroke. What would be the expected differential for a new 90HP 4-stroke?
Bob

We have a 1999 model 75 hp. on a 20' Starcraft pontoon.

It has been a flawless performer-400 plus hours.

However, it is thirsty and uses a lot of oil.

I really can't complain considering how hard it has to work.
