Have a 1990 Mercury 175 with a design 1 trim and tilt unit - has been a battle due to release valve being seized and actually deteriorated ( probably original as in black plastic if anyone remembers) - motor was dead and replaced it and pump changing to a 2 wire vice 3 - got a new stainless relief valve but getting it in completely after first carefully drill out didn't work leaks - tried again and now it's completely in but haven't tested it yet and odds are due to drill out it still won't work. So I have a new stainless valve and a brand new motor and pump that works - so anybody knows of anyone that might have a working unit without the pump and/or reservoir - don't even need the tilt ram or either pin - only been able to find used units complete $400 - or new/refurbished $900 or an off er to rebuild mine for prob $1100. So any leads on a unit without the motor etc appreciated.

basically just need the body - if the trim rods are in decent condition fine - my body because of the release valve drill out is shot

Can you drill the manual release hole oversize and tap for a flush bushing?

hadn't heard of doing that - I had drilled it through and got a stainless steel valve into it after having to drill a bit more to get it in almost flush but still leaks - haven't drilled it oversize - would a machinist know what I was talking about if I showed them the unit and explained what I wanted?

You would need to find a flush bushing that fits the release valve. Then you would drill and tap for the OD of the flush bushing.

I have no idea if you have the material to drill and the space to install the flush bushing.

thanks for your help - I found a used unit on eBay that looks like it will work - now I just have to get the tri lobe pin out and get the unit out - put my new motor and pump in the used unit and install it. Seems like no matter which way I have gone with this I just keep running into road blocks/obstacles - but removing the knockdown engine hoist from my trunk putting it together then taking it down and putting it back in the trunk has definitely been strength building exercise lol.
