Guys, I trying to troubleshoot my own motor by phone with the guys working on it. It's a Mariner 50 Hp 4 cly built in '83 (Serial Number: 06453196 Model Number: 7050623)

My schematic shows a mercury tilt kill switch -- the repair shop doesn't think there is one.....

Does this motor have one and if so --- a bad switch there could easily cause intermitant spark, right?

ALso, where is it on the motor physically? (Since I bought this motor use, maybe the previous owner took it out?

Re: Mercury Tilt kill switch on 83 50 hp cly?

ZenBasser:
I have an 85 60hp and it has a mercury swtch on it. It is basicly a tube with mercury in it and when tilited, the mercury flows to make a connection much like a kill switch. It should be mounted on right side (When looking at the engine from the rear). Ussually, if it goes bad, the spark is not intermitent. If you find it, diconnect it and see if the problem persists.
I had a similar problem with mine and found week spots in the wires leading from the stator and trigger leading to the switch box. After all of that was fixed, I was able to track down the problem to the switch box. In the end, the switch box quit working all together. After I replaced it, everything work fine.
The only way I was able to test the switch box was to turn the engine over in burst and measure the voltage comeing from the stator (13v +) and trigger (3-4v +/-).
You may consider investing in a over the counter or factory service manual. Check out Mercury Parts Express +
Or they sell the manuals at IBoats
Good Luck

A bad tilt/mercury switch probably won't cause intermittant spark, unless it 's mounted improperly,or not bolted down tight.

I looked up your engine, and I don't believe you have one.

All components need testing, but I bet the switch box loses.

DHP

Thanks for the help....shortly after I posted this, they called back......it turns out when they replaced the switch box ...they cross wired it. (DOH!) Anyway, after 7 long weeks, the boat is home and the final bill was fair and reasonable.......
