Mercury trigger wires

1976 Mercury 7.5 manual start Serial number 4555696.

Bought just recently , It died out on the lake and looking it over the trigger wires came apart with about 1/2 in hanging out from under fly wheel ,
Both trigger wires are brown in color thinking of soldering them back on but want to verify if orientation maters on these wires ? Don't want to have to pull top of motor apart if not necessary .

Well hooking up a trigger with the wires reversed damage anything? I don't want to toast the trigger but am willing to try hooking it up and if it doesn't run I can swap them around if hooking them up reversed will not cause any damage?

Just in case this question comes up for some one else .

Note that some engines had 2 Brown wires and no White
trigger wire. In this case, connect the Brown wire from the switch box to one of the Brown wires from the trigger and
the White wire from the switch box to the other Brown wire from the trigger. If the engine backfires when you attempt
to start the engine, swap the connection from the White wire to the other Brown wire from the trigger.
