Mercury Trolling Motor Lbs. Thrust

My question is similar to one posted previously by someone else, but had no response. I have a Mercury Thruster RX28 - 4 speed (Serial #OA293530) which of course was not born yesterday, I think maybe in the 80's and there is very little information available. I thought there might be an Admiral or Captain who could I.D. the lbs. thrust of this unit. My plans are not to use the motor for typical Bass Boat use. I do a lot of drift fishing and intend to use the motor to hold the drift when I hit a hot spot (fish finder) or drop offs for lake trout. If I could find the lbs. thrust, I could ask the next question, will the motor hold a 1984 20' SeaRay in a fairly calm breeze? I don't want to start drilling holes in the boat and later find the motor won't do the job.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Mercury Trolling Motor Lbs. Thrust

I'm not sure of the thrust but I think most of the older Mercurys were anywhere from 24-36 pound thrust.
Not much considering what guys are using today.
I guess that would hold your boat in a calm breeze but that would be about it.
If your boat is decent I would buy a good trolling motor. Don't want to pay the price for a new trolling motor? Check out WWW.Westernbass.com
There is a S.Cal forum/classified section and a N.Cal forum/classified section. The N.Cal section gets alot of posts unlike the S.cal. If you can't find a good used trolling motor on the S.Cal classified section buy one from the N.Cal section and have it shipped (Fedex is cheapest probably around $20). I see trolling motors all the time.
Also make sure the shaft is the correct length for you boat.
You can pose your troling motor question on the N.Cal forum page and will probably get an answer because there is alot of old time bass fisherman that used to run those trolling motors.

I know this might sound a little silly but why not tie a heavy fish scales between the boat and dock on a nice calm morning and fire up the trolling motor and read the scale.

BassAct, I would really concider buying a decent trolling motor. I have a Motor Guide with 35lbs thrust on my 12 foot aluminum and really wish I had more thrust. One of these days the Santa Ana's are going to kick up like it did on me and the motor won't start. My trolling motor kept me from slamming into the rocks...JMHO....Warren
