just bought a 1982 mercury 70 hp the motor ran great the first day about 6 hours , so went back to the lake a few days later boat fired right up ran fine for about 2 miles then began to miss, shut it off fire back up a few minutes later it would run fine for a short distance then miss again did this all day long, so came home called marina they said sounds like the switchbox, well I bought a new one put it on fired the boat up same thing still missing, so called again said change coils,, well bought them, fired it up same thing, heres where it gets funny, so bought new spark plugs..wow it runs good sat in the driveway idleing and revving fine let it run about 10 minutes yes I had a hose feeding it with water. SO shut it off, next day before heading to the lake for a good test run I hit the key....nothing won't fire up????? cranked and cranked..nothing went back over all the wiring all the coils the switchbox everything???? removed plugs cranked over and seems to have a real weak looking spark..... opened the carb cover just to be safe and sprayed gas in while cranking still no signs of firing up???? any ideas, the marinas are all backed up with work right now.
